The word PC is a commonly used term for the word computer. PC is short for personal computer and this phrase can pretty much describe any computer, it is commonly associated with machines that run a Windows operating system.

The operating system on a computer is the major piece of software that determines which applications you can run and how you can communicate with the computer itself. Some popular operating systems are Windows, Unix, Linux, and Mac OS X.

When shopping for a new computer there are different types of PCs that you can choose from. For example, there are towers, laptops, and net books. Each one has different advantages and disadvantages, and each usually come with its own pre-installed operating system.

Tower or desktopA tower or desktop as they are commonly called, is a computer that has been designed to stay in one place. They vary in size, but they are larger than both laptops, and net books. Most Towers come with a keyboard and mouse. If a screen doesn't come with your tower then you will need to purchase one.

Laptops and net books are all-in-one machines that are small and mobile. You will not need to purchase additional equipment to work with them. The disadvantages of these type are that they are normally more expensive than towers Laptopand usually have less power for computing than a tower.

Some of the technical terms that you should notice include RAM (random access memory) and processor. The RAM is how much memory the computer can access for running applications. Usually the more RAM you have, the faster your machine will be, but the speed will also depend on the other components within the computer. The processor determines how fast the machine will run and how many applications it will be able to run at the same time.

When choosing a new computer, you should also pay attention to the size of their hard drives. The hard drive is where all of the software and files are stored. Includes your music, videos, and documents. Larger hard drives will be able to hold more files than smaller hard drives.
